About the Event
In September 1565 a French fleet sailing toward Fort Caroline to save it from the Spanish, was blown southward by either a hurricane or nor'easter. Several ships were lost in the storm near Ponce Inlet, three others were later scuttled in a river. The beleaguered survivors marched northward but were met by Spanish soldiers led by Pedro Menendez.
